What to expect
Heritage railways run restored steam and diesel trains along preserved lines, usually run by charities and volunteers. A return trip can take an hour or two, with stops at old-style stations, and often there’s a museum, café or picnic spot along the way.
Themed event days
- Santa Specials in December. Book early: see our Christmas days out.
- Character and storybook days.
- Halloween ghost trains and Easter egg hunts.
- Gala weekends with extra engines in steam.
Famous routes
The Jacobite in the Scottish Highlands crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct seen in the Harry Potter films. See our filming locations guide. Many other lines cross viaducts and coastline or climb into the hills.
Saving money
Look for family tickets, “rover” tickets for unlimited travel on the day, and under-5s free. Some heritage railways accept Blue Peter badges. Check the BBC’s list.
