Scout’s tip

Scout’s location tip

Pair a big ticket with a free one. Watching the Jacobite cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct is free, and so is a photo at Platform 9¾.

  • Alnwick Castle runs broomstick training sessions
  • The Jacobite runs seasonally: book early
  • Check opening seasons before travelling far

Alnwick Castle, Northumberland

Alnwick Castle was used for Hogwarts exteriors in the first two films. Its outer bailey is where Harry’s first flying lesson was filmed, and families can join broomstick training there today. alnwickcastle.com

Glenfinnan Viaduct and the Jacobite, Scotland

The curving Glenfinnan Viaduct appears in several films. The Jacobite steam train runs between Fort William and Mallaig on a seasonal timetable and sells out early. Watching it cross from the viewpoints near the Glenfinnan visitor centre is free. Read more in our steam train days out guide.

King’s Cross, London

A luggage trolley vanishes into the wall at Platform 9¾, next to a themed shop. Photos with your own camera are free. Go early to beat the queue.

Gloucester Cathedral

Gloucester Cathedral’s cloisters were used for Hogwarts corridors in several films. It’s a working cathedral, so check visiting times and any charges before you go.

Then the real sets

Finish with the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, where you can walk through the actual sets. See all our Harry Potter days out.
