Santa experiences
Garden centres, farms, castles and theme parks all run Santa experiences. Compare what you get: a short grotto visit, or a longer experience with elves, crafts and a quality gift. Weekend slots in December sell out first.
Christmas light trails
Illuminated trails at gardens, zoos and country estates are a festive favourite. Look for weekday or early-evening tickets, which are often cheaper. Take a torch for the car park and wrap up warm.
Santa steam trains
Many heritage railways run “Santa Specials”, where Santa walks through the carriages handing out gifts. They’re hugely popular, so book early. See our steam train days out guide.
Pantomimes and Christmas shows
Panto is a great first theatre trip. Matinees and early-December performances are often cheaper than shows near Christmas.
Christmas markets
UK cities host markets through November and December, and Europe’s famous markets make a magical short break. Our sister site has a guide to Christmas market city breaks. Abroad, Disneyland Paris and Tivoli Gardens both run Christmas seasons. See days out around the world.
