Scout’s tip

Scout’s market tip

Go on a weekday afternoon, just as the lights come on. You get the sparkle without the evening crowds.

  • Carriers beat buggies in busy aisles
  • Set a budget for treats and rides
  • Many markets are free to enter

When to go

Many UK markets open from mid to late November and run until just before Christmas. Weekends and evenings are busiest, so weekday afternoons are the sweet spot with children.

What families love

  • Carousels and small fairground rides.
  • Pop-up ice rinks. See ice skating with kids.
  • Santa’s grottos (often bookable in advance).
  • Treats: hot chocolate, waffles and roasted chestnuts.

Markets abroad

Europe’s famous markets in Germany, Austria and France make a magical short break. Our sister site has a guide to Christmas market city breaks, and Disneyland Paris and Tivoli Gardens both run Christmas seasons.
