Scout’s tip

Scout’s park plan

Pick one or two short, rewarding trails each day, ending at a waterfall, viewpoint or lake, rather than one long hike. Kids walk further when there’s a “wow” at the end.

  • Get a Junior Ranger booklet at the visitor centre
  • Some popular parks need timed-entry reservations in peak season
  • Carry more water than you think

Become a Junior Ranger

Many national parks run a free Junior Ranger programme: children complete an activity booklet and take a pledge to earn a badge. Pick up a booklet at the visitor centre or download one from the park’s website. nps.gov

Passes that save money

  • Every Kid Outdoors: fourth graders get a free pass for the family. See how to get it.
  • America the Beautiful pass: an annual pass covering entrance fees at federal recreation sites. Check eligibility and current pricing on recreation.gov, as fees for some visitors changed in 2026.
  • Fee-free days: published each year by the NPS.

Family-friendly parks

Parks with short, paved or easy trails, good visitor centres and lodging nearby work best for younger kids. Popular parks can need timed-entry reservations in peak season, so check the park’s website when you plan.

Stay safe

  • Keep a safe distance from wildlife and never feed animals.
  • Stay on marked trails, especially near cliffs and thermal areas.
  • Check weather and park alerts on the official park page before setting out.
