Scout’s tip

Scout’s surf tip

Book a lesson with a qualified instructor at a lifeguarded beach. They’ll pick safe conditions, and soft boards make learning much easier.

  • Kids should be confident swimmers
  • Wetsuits are usually included
  • Bring suncream even when it’s cloudy

Where to learn

  • North Cornwall and North Devon have many surf schools on beginner-friendly beaches.
  • Inland surf lakes, like The Wave near Bristol, offer consistent waves and lessons.
  • Abroad, many European beach resorts have surf schools too.

What’s included

Most lessons include a soft board and wetsuit, a beach briefing and time in the shallows with an instructor. Group lessons are cheaper. Private lessons progress faster.

Staying safe

Surf between the black and white flags where they’re used, and never on a red flag. Read beach safety for families and see surf and paddle days out.
