The family picnic day out checklist

A good picnic saves money and stops “hangry” meltdowns. Here’s what to pack for a family day out, and what to check before you bring food into an attraction.

Scout’s tip

Scout’s picnic rule

Check the attraction’s food policy before you pack. Most parks, zoos and heritage sites have picnic areas, but some restrict glass, alcohol or cool boxes.

  • Freeze water bottles to use as ice packs
  • Pack snacks for the queue
  • Bring a bag for rubbish

Food that travels well

  • Wraps and sandwiches that won’t go soggy (pack fillings separately for little ones).
  • Chopped fruit and veg sticks.
  • Cheese, crackers and cold pasta salads.
  • A treat for later, which works brilliantly as a bribe on the way home!

The kit

  • Cool bag with ice packs or frozen bottles.
  • Picnic blanket with a waterproof backing.
  • Refillable water bottles.
  • Wipes, hand gel, kitchen roll and bin bags.
  • Plates, cups and cutlery (reusable is cheaper over time).

Keeping food safe

Keep perishable food cool, in the shade, and eat it within a few hours. Throw away anything that’s been sitting in the sun. The UK Food Standards Agency has more food safety guidance.

Where to picnic

Most zoos, theme parks and heritage sites have picnic areas, and free days out like beaches and parks are perfect. More saving ideas in days out on a budget.
