National Rail 2FOR1 days out: how it works

Travel to a day out by train and you could get 2FOR1 entry or money off at hundreds of UK attractions. Here’s how the Days Out Guide works, and the mistakes that cost families their discount.

Scout’s tip

Scout’s 2FOR1 checklist

The number one mistake? Tapping in with contactless. You need a proper National Rail ticket, paper or e-ticket, for each person using the offer.

  • Check the live listing: some offers are 1/3 off, not 2FOR1
  • Some attractions need you to pre-book with a code
  • Others need a printed voucher

How it works

  1. Find an attraction on the Days Out Guide and read its offer.
  2. Get the voucher or booking reference, or the discount code for pre-booking, as the listing explains.
  3. Travel by train with a valid National Rail ticket to or near the attraction.
  4. Show your ticket and voucher or booking reference at the attraction.

Which tickets count?

You need a valid National Rail ticket (paper or e-ticket) for the date of your visit. Oyster pay as you go, contactless payments and TfL-issued tickets don’t qualify. Some railcard and staff travel schemes have their own rules, so check the terms.

Not every offer is 2FOR1

Some listings give one-third off or another discount instead. In 2026, offers have included the Tower of London, London Zoo and LEGOLAND Windsor, but listings change, so always read the live offer before you travel.

Is it worth it?

For families travelling into a city, especially London, 2FOR1 can halve the cost of the paying adults’ entry. Add a railcard such as the Family & Friends Railcard to cut the train fare too. Then add free museums to make a full, great-value day.
