Indoor snow centres: skiing without the mountains

Real snow, all year round, often under an hour from home. Indoor snow centres are perfect for first-timers and for practising before a ski trip.

Scout’s tip

Scout’s snow tip

Book a beginner lesson, not just slope time. You’ll learn to stop and turn safely, which is the bit that matters!

  • Gloves are usually compulsory
  • Wear layers: it’s chilly inside
  • Snow play sessions suit little ones

Where to go

UK indoor real-snow centres include the Snowdome in Tamworth and Chill Factore in Manchester. Many areas also have outdoor dry slopes, which are cheaper but harder to fall on.

What to wear

  • Waterproof trousers and jacket.
  • Gloves (often compulsory) and warm layers.
  • Long socks. Boots, skis and helmets are usually provided with lessons.

Before a ski holiday

A few lessons before a ski trip mean kids can join ski school at a higher level. Compare holidays on TravelDeals, and see snow and ice days out.

Frequently asked questions

Can kids learn to ski indoors?
Yes. Indoor real-snow centres run children’s lessons, and some have snow play areas for younger kids not ready for skis.
