Geocaching: a free real-life treasure hunt

There are hidden containers all around you, in parks, woods and even towns, waiting to be found. Geocaching turns any walk into a treasure hunt.

Scout’s tip

Scout’s geocaching tip

Start with “easy” caches near paths. If you trade a trinket, leave something of equal or greater value, and always sign the log.

  • Free basic app account
  • Be discreet so non-geocachers don’t find the cache
  • Put it back exactly where you found it

How it works

Geocachers hide containers (“caches”) and post their GPS locations online. You use the official app or website to navigate to them, find the cache, sign the logbook and log your find. A free basic membership gives access to lots of caches.

What’s inside

Usually a logbook and sometimes small trinkets to swap. Some caches hold “trackables” that travel from cache to cache around the world.

Why teens like it too

Harder puzzle caches and multi-stage hunts are proper brain-teasers. It’s a gateway to escape rooms and longer nature adventures.
