Scout’s tip

Scout’s camping tip

Do a practice night in the garden first. You’ll find out what’s missing, and whether everyone actually likes it, without a long drive home.

  • Pick a campsite with good facilities first time
  • Nights get cold, even in summer
  • Pitch your tent before dark

Choosing a campsite

For a first trip, choose a site with toilets, showers and a play area, not too far from home. Check whether it allows campfires, and how far the car park is from your pitch.

The kit that matters

  • A tent you’ve practised putting up.
  • Warm sleeping bags rated for the season, plus mats or airbeds.
  • Head torches for everyone.
  • A simple stove, pans and a cool box.
  • Layers, waterproofs and wellies.

Not sure about tents?

Try glamping first: beds, sometimes electricity, all the fun. Plan days out from the site with the adventure finder.
