Family cycling days out

Flat, car-free trails, a café halfway and the wind in your hair. Cycling is a cheap, healthy family day out that teens enjoy too.

Scout’s tip

Scout’s cycling tip

Pick a route about half as long as you think. You can always do more, but tired legs miles from the car are no fun.

  • Helmets for everyone
  • Check tyres and brakes before you go
  • Old railway paths are flat and gentle

Where to ride

Former railway lines, canal towpaths (check local rules), forest trails and country parks often have traffic-free routes. Many forests have colour-graded trails and bike hire. In the US, rail trails and state parks offer the same.

Kit for little riders

  • Balance bikes for toddlers.
  • Child seats, trailers or tag-alongs for younger kids.
  • Helmets, bright clothes, water and snacks.

Plan the day

Choose a route with a playground or café halfway. Find more in karts, skates and bikes and nature days out.
